The Reality for Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Lee H

This year, the NAS published a report for Autism Awareness Week, with their finding that in today’s Britain not all individuals with autism & Asperger syndrome receive the help they need. It states, only 38% have a proper assessment. The majority of those assessed do not receive the help recommended by their assessment. Another problem mentioned is that of late diagnosis. 18% of lower functioning adults and 46% of those with Asperger syndrome were not diagnosed before age 16. I myself was 23 before being diagnosed with A.S. This report made me count myself lucky to be one of those receiving a service.
