Parent Representation: Explained
- NAS has identified, that working in partnership with parents to ensure people with autistic spectrum disorders receive appropriate care and support, is an integral part of our culture;
- All services have been asked to review their mechanisms for parent representation;
- But Where are we now? and What are we working towards?
Where are we now...
Current forms of parent representation
- Parent partnership groups: 3+ a year
- BBQs, Xmas party and other special events
- SCC: Parent representatives
- Reviews for service users
- Individual Service Review (LSS's): Questionnaire 2 x per year
- Informal: Telephone contact, weekend visits etc...
- Service User Newsletter
- Pre-Accreditation Questionnaire
What we are working towards...
- We aim to work with parents of service users, to compile an action plan for parent participation, in agreement with parents/next of kin;
- The action plan will be specific, measuable, achievable, realistic, timed and reviewed regularly;
- It will also identify specific measures under the following headings...
Eliciting views and opinions
Each NAS service will have a tangible mechanism for eliciting the views and opinions of all service users' parents and responding to them
Where we are now:
Reviews for service users, Parents partnership forum, SSC, The Individual Service Review, The Service Update, Parent meetings, Complaints procedure
What we want to work towards:
Complaints: To ensure all parents are aware of the service complaints procedure i.e. by setting up a discussion group within the parent partnership forum for example.
Training: To organise training days/ or coffee mornings for parents in which to inform them of service update, training, discussion group in current support initiatives i.e. PCP
Open days: For all LSS's in which parents/carers are invited by service users to view their work.
CHAT newsletter: To put it to the CHAT newsletter re: possibly interviewing parent/carers for their point of view
The Service Update: To ensure that this is conducted on a regular basis i.e. every six months
Parent Pack: Design a parent friendly document on conduct/visits and expectations
Contribution to the care management process
Each NAS service will support service users' parents in contributing to the care management process as it relates to their son or daughter

What we are working towards:
Develop a Service Working Party: To create a service development discussion forum that has parent representation
Training: To organise training days/ or coffee mornings for parents in which to inform them of service update, training, discussion group in current support initiatives i.e. PCP
The Service Update: To ensure that this is conducted on a regular basis i.e. every six months
Parent Pack: Design a parent friendly document on conduct/visits and expectations
Effective Communication
Each NAS service will seek agreement with service users' parents regarding frequency and content of communication regarding their son/daughter's progress within the service and ensure that said agreements are adhered to

Training: To organise training days/ or coffee mornings for parents in which to inform them of service update, training, discussion group in current support initiatives i.e. PCP

Each NAS service will establish mechanisms for sharing the results of external inspection reports with service users' parents

Training: To organise training days/ or coffee mornings for parents in which to inform them or service update, training, discussion group in current support initiatives i.e. PCP
Open days: For all LSS's in which parents/carers are invited by service users to view their work.
The Service Update: To ensure that this is conducted on a regular basis i.e. every six months

Information on ASD: Attend workshops, join support groups, sent out current information on research in ASD (as requested)
Conduct and visits
Each NAS service will, within the limits set by regulations, agree a protocol for the conduct of home visits and visits to the service

What we want to work towards:
Code of conduct: All parents to receive a copy of the 'Code of conduct' - GSCC
Training: To organise training days/ or coffee mornings for parents in which to inform them or service update, training, discussions group in current support initiatives, i.e. PCP
Parent pack: Design a parent friendly document on conduct/visits and expectations
Develop a Service Working Party: To create a service development discussion forum that has parent representation
